In fourth grade Spanish, we are using mostly a storytelling approach to learning Spanish. The students are very engaged as we dramatize each scene, and it helps them retain the vocabulary more successfully. So far, the students are doing very well with this approach! For extra help studying the vocabulary, we have a 4th grade quizlet page that can be accessed using the link below.
October 24th-November 3rd: We have resumed our stories, with the current one focusing on monsters. Soon we will begin studying "el día de los muertos" and will begin making an "ofrenda" or altar to honor deceased loved ones. I sent out an email with information on how to sign up to bring in items needed for our altar. We will be tying the cultural information students learn in Spanish to the book they are currently reading with Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Biega, Ghosts. I can't wait to see the ideas these guys come up with!
October 9th-20th: We missed a few classes due to Fall Break, Fall Festival, and other school-wide programs, but we've recently gotten back on track and are reviewing vocabulary for parts of the body. We're using this vocabulary to talk about what hurts us and others, and we're role playing some doctor-patient scenarios to recommend some medical care. You'd be surprised how quickly these students are to give their friends an injection or send them to the operating room--it's pretty funny!
September 25th-29th: We are learning about famous people of Hispanic or Latino backgrounds in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (mid-September to mid-October). We are doing some research on a famous person of each student's choice and are putting together a visual presentation to be presented in class next Monday, Oct. 3rd. The students may either make a traditional poster, a smaller size poster, or a digital presentation in PowerPoint or Prezi or any other software they know how to use. We should complete the research in class, so it will just be a matter of doing the "clean" version at home for homework. The students have been given an example of the finished product along with their guidelines of what to include. This project should be done in English. I will attempt to share a link to the project guidelines here, so you can refer to pages 5-7 in particular if your student is missing their papers.
